Stará Voda lies about 8 km west of Mariánské Lázně. The municipality is on an old trade route from Plzeň to Cheb. The first mention of the village dates from 1380.

A local landmark is the half-timbered, octagonal Chapel of St Anne, founded in 1712 and topped with a shingle roof. A transmitter stands on Dyleň Hill (940 m) in the Bohemian Forest, within the municipality; according to tradition, Napoleon identified it as the centre of Europe. Stará Voda also has a public sports facility with a multi-purpose playing field.
