Prameny lies in the southern part of Slavkovský les, within the Slavkovský les Protected Landscape Area, at an elevation of over 700 metres. The first mention of the settlement dates to 1357.

In 1870, a small spa was established here, and Prameny was granted town status in 1873. Silver and tin were formerly mined in the surrounding area. The cadastral area of the municipality contains the national natural monuments Křížky and Upolínová louka pod Křížky; the latter includes a wet meadow with abundant flowering plants.
